Bedford Heritage Day

Sunday 21 May 2017

Bedford Corn Exchange, St Pauls Square

1pm – 4pm

Join the Polish Language and Culture Association and celebrate openness, appreciation and better understanding between our communities. The project is part of the Polish Heritage Day initiative by the Polish Embassy in London along with over 40 events planned across the UK and supported by the Polish Consulates in London, Manchester, and Edinburgh.

On 21st May, the Polish Language and Culture Association (PLCA) in cooperation with Bedford Borough Strategic Partnership, Bedfordshire Police Community Cohesion Team, Healthwatch BB, and will proudly host the first Bedford Heritage Day, the event designed for all ages, all communities and all nationalities. The main purpose of the event is to celebrate the wonderful diversity of our town. We aim to ignite wonder and the confidence that comes from exploring and cherishing our individual heritages, as well as strengthening community cohesion and mutual respect. This can only happen when people of different backgrounds and cultures come and get to know each other.

Explore Polish cuisine through free food tastings provided by Best-Pol Delicatessen. A stall with "Around the world" confections will be available for anyone with a sweet tooth. A book sale and food from different countries will help you explore cultures through different ways. All of this will be accompanied by live music.

As we focus on dance as a common language between us, we have invited a Polish Folklore dance group ‘Kujawy’ to perform a variety of traditional dances. They will travel all the way from Poland to be here with us and represent Polish folk. We have a performance of 21st Century Education Trust, Natyam Academy, who will take us for the journey through India with their breathtaking traditional dance performance. ChaniquesDance4Fun and Performance Art Group PLCA will perform modern dance.

At the beginning of the event, prizes will be awarded to the winners of Art Competition, of which the main objective was to give the students of Bedford an opportunity to explore their heritage. The title of the competition was "What does your heritage mean to you?", and you will have a chance to see the competing artworks on display.

Admission to the event is free. Please come and join us in celebrating diversity in Bedford Corn Exchange on Sunday 21 May, starting at 1pm.

More information about the festival can be found on the website www.plca.org.uk, on Facebook- www.facebook.com/BedfordHeritageDay/ @BedfordHeritageDay and Twitter ThePLCA.
