Jazz Night: Leon Greening

Monday 24 July 2017

The Bedford Arms, 2 Bromham Road, Bedford MK40 2QA

This week The Bedford Arms hosts two of the most popular musicians on the British Jazz scene today, Pianist Leon Greening and Double Bassist Adam King.

Pianist Leon Greening's hard swinging style has made him a favourite on the jazz scene for over a decade, and makes no apologies for his adoration of the great bebop pianists.

Greening pays tribute to predecessors Wynton Kelly, Bobby Timmons, Vic Feldman and Dudley Moore with powerful and swinging assessments of their tunes, stirs in a couple of his own numbers along with a Wayne Shorter piece and the neglected I Want To Be Wanted (also once recorded by Vic Feldman). While choosing great role models, Greening is astute enough to have found his own voice and avoided the quicksand of copying.

Leon is one of finest pianists this country has ever produced. He was voted runner-up in the 1999 Sun Alliance Musician of the Year awards.

He has performed at Ronnie Scott’s and with Christian Brewer Quartet, Matt Wates Sextet, Gareth Lockrane Septet, toured with pop band ‘Incognito’ & performed many dates around the country with his own Trio.

“Leon Greening nails his bebop colours to the mast and lets us hear what all the fuss is about" Jim Mullen

Adam King was introduced to jazz by his father, a saxophonist, who would practice and play jazz in the King household. Pop/R&B classic recordings such as Stevie Wonder’s Innervisions & Marvin Gaye’s Midnight Love, as well as jazz classics by greats such as Miles Davis, Dexter Gordon and Horace Silver, were ever present and these would provide the formative basis for future musical endeavours. After initially playing alto sax he then moved to bass guitar after being blown away by the genius of Jaco Pastorius.

Adam studied Jazz at Middlesex University, gaining a First Class Honours. Taking up double bass in the second year of his studies, he has become one of the most in demand bassists on the UK scene. He has played with some of the most prolific musicians on the UK and international jazz scene including Peter King, Stan Tracey, Julian Joseph, Joe Cohn, Jim Mullen, Alan Barnes, Dave Newton and Nigel Hitchcock amongst many others. He can often be seen playing at London’s top jazz establishments such as Ronnie Scott’s, 606 Jazz Club and Pizza Express Jazz Club.

Adam currently is based professionally in the UK and has toured internationally with various bands and artists. He is also just as comfortable in the studio as on stage having recorded for the likes of Warner Brothers, Universal and the BBC. He is also a busy composer and producer and writes in many different genres for commercial purposes.

Adam is the winner of The Musicians’ Company’s Young Jazz Musician Award 2015.

Music starts at 8.30pm, with suggested contributions of £5 per person to ensure the musicians get a fair fee for their performance.
