Empowered Women Empower Women - Mique Moriuchi, Illustrator at Rogan's Books

Thursday 14 November 2019

Next in our programme of talks showcasing and celebrating the talented women of Bedford is Children's Book Illustrator Mique Moriuchi.

Mique makes pictures with acrylic paint, scissors, paper and glue. She loves colour and texture. Her workspace is messy, with paper trails often leading to the kitchen.

Since completing her studies in Illustration in 1999 (MA at University of Brighton, BA(Hons) at Norwich University of the Arts), she has illustrated 23 picture books to date.

Her illustration career was put on hold 8 years ago when she became a mum, but she carried on creating personal pieces whenever she could. They were thoughts and observations on motherhood and her growing children, but more than that, they were a much-needed creative release; a way in which to connect to who she was before she became a mum.

For this evening's talk, she will be presenting a selection of her work. Spanning over 20 years, it will cover early work from her student years up until the present day, including picture book commissions, personal pieces and autobiographical work. She will talk about the struggle, the self doubt and self belief, the frustrations, the funny side but most importantly her love of making pictures.

This programme of events is presented by Women of Bedford, a not-for-profit group working hard to raise the first female statue in the town, and curated by Chiara Mac Call Photography.
