NBCUniversal, through its Universal Destinations & Experiences division, is exploring the creation of a flagship entertainment resort right here in Bedford. The proposed 476-acre site in Kempston Hardwick could become home to one of Europe’s most exciting attractions, with an expected opening around 2031, subject to planning approvals.

This isn’t just about rollercoasters and shows, it’s about putting Bedford on the global map and unlocking long-term growth, investment, and opportunity – something at Love Bedford we feel very strongly about.

In a landmark announcement for Bedford Borough, Elected Mayor Tom Wootton shared:

“This is a landmark moment for Bedford Borough. Universal’s decision to proceed with its theme park and resort in the UK brings exciting opportunities to our doorstep – thousands of jobs, new training and career paths, and a huge boost for local businesses.

Bedford is the perfect place for this investment – well-connected, full of talent, and ready to grow. We’re proud to be chosen as the home of Universal in the UK. I’m delighted that our residents and communities will benefit in the years and decades ahead. I will continue to work closely with Universal and local stakeholders to deliver for them.” (Bedford Borough Council News)

Bedford’s brilliant location is one of the reasons we love it, and it’s why Universal has it in their sights. Within two hours of more than half the UK population and with improvements planned for the A421 and Kempston Hardwick station, this site is ready to be something special. Accessibility is a huge advantage, and it’s only set to get better.

A421 Upgrades
To support increased vehicle access to the resort, Universal has proposed the construction of new dedicated slip roads from the A421. This major east–west route connects Bedford to Milton Keynes and the wider motorway network, and the improvements are intended to manage higher traffic volumes efficiently and reduce congestion around the site. These upgrades are referenced in Universal’s official Media Factsheet, which outlines infrastructure improvements as a core part of the resort’s development.

Kempston Hardwick Station Enhancements
Kempston Hardwick Station, which lies near the proposed resort site, is expected to receive significant investment as part of the wider transport plan. Although detailed designs have not yet been published, Universal’s documents confirm plans for improvements to the station to accommodate future visitor numbers and improve accessibility. The Media Factsheet highlights this as one of the key transport links set to be upgraded in response to the development.

Wixams Station Expansion
A new station at Wixams is already under development to serve the growing residential community and surrounding areas. Universal’s proposal supports an expanded version of Wixams Station as part of the regional infrastructure investment. The Media Factsheet refers to this station expansion as a priority to ensure reliable rail access to the resort. Additional platforms and enhanced capacity may be introduced to accommodate both daily commuters and the large volume of theme park visitors expected annually.

A Boost for Bedford’s Economy and Community

The impact on Bedford could be transformational:

  • Up to 8.5 million visitors in the first year alone
  • £50 billion contribution to the UK economy by 2055 (Media Factsheet, UKG Press Release)
  • Around 28,000 total jobs created across construction, hospitality, and creative sectors
  • Up to 80% of the workforce expected to come from Bedfordshire and surrounding areas

Laura Church, Chief Executive of Bedford Borough Council, noted:

“I am excited about the next phase and the borough’s role in elevating the UK’s profile as a leader in the visitor economy and creative industries. With continued sustainable growth, Bedford Borough is poised to become a must-visit destination and a prime hub for business investment, driving growth for our community.

At opening, Universal will be one of the largest employers in the region, and it is expected that approximately 80% of employees will come from Bedford, Central Bedfordshire, Luton & Milton Keynes.”

This means more business for our shops, restaurants, local services, and creatives. It’s a boost that could support and sustain our community for decades.

While official plans are still being developed, Universal’s parks around the world are famous for incredible themed lands based on franchises like Jurassic World, Harry Potter, and Despicable Me. There’s also been talk of British icons making their way into the park, like Paddington Bear or James Bond.

A resort of this scale could include a 500-room hotel, new green spaces, shopping, restaurants, and more. These are early ideas, but they give a sense of the ambition behind the proposal.

When will it open?
