Bedford Borough Council is delighted to announce a significant milestone for the long-awaited Bedford and Milton Keynes Waterway project. On Thursday, 11 July, a special event celebrated the official launch of the project’s delivery phase.
This delivery phase will focus on constructing sections of the canal as part of a flexible and strategic approach, as funding opportunities become available. The phased approach will ensure that the project continues to progress while maximising its potential impact.
“The Bedford and Milton Keynes Waterway is no longer just a vision, it’s becoming a reality,” said elected Mayor of Bedford Borough, Tom Wootton. “The launch of the delivery phase marks a significant milestone, and we’re excited to collaborate with our partners to bring this transformative project to life.”
The Bedford and Milton Keynes Waterway project is much more than just a canal. The proposed phased delivery aims to encourage development and economic growth throughout the corridor, creating new jobs, leisure opportunities, and environmental benefits for the region while critically also helping to manage water.
“I’m thrilled to announce that the Bedford and Milton Keynes Waterway Park is taking a major step forward,” said Simon Clewlow, Chair of the Bedford and Milton Keynes Waterway Trust. “The launch of a new delivery phase signifies years of hard work and dedication coming to fruition. This phased approach ensures benefits come to the local area now, while at the same time, we will keep promoting how the strategic benefits the project will bring to the region can be maximised. We look forward to collaborating with all our partners to turn the overall vision into a reality.”
The completed waterway will connect Milton Keynes to Bedford, linking the Grand Union Canal with the River Great Ouse. This vital connection will not only boost tourism and recreation, but also provide an alternative route for more sustainable modes of transport.
The launch event at the Forest of Marston Vale Centre was a successful gathering, featuring insightful talks about the project and a tour of key sites along the proposed route.
