Bedford Junior Aquathlon shatters participation record with 204 young athletes

Bedford Borough Council’s Sports Development team proudly celebrates the record-breaking success of the 2025 Bedford Junior Aquathlon held on Sunday, 12th October, at Robinson Pools & Fitness and Bedford Park. This year’s event attracted an unprecedented 204 children, the highest number ever in the Aquathlon’s 19-year history.

Young competitors aged 7 to 16 (school years 3 to 11) demonstrated impressive swimming and running skills in a welcoming and inclusive environment. Distances were specially designed for each age category, beginning with a 66-metre swim and 600-metre run for Year 3, up to a challenging 400-metre swim and 2.8-kilometre run for participants in Years 10 and 11.

Councillor Sarah Gallagher, Portfolio Holder for Customer Experience, Leisure and Culture, commented, “Reaching over 200 participants this weekend is a remarkable achievement for the Bedford Junior Aquathlon. It’s fantastic to see so many children from across Bedford Borough embracing fitness with such enthusiasm and spirit. Events like this play a crucial role in promoting health, confidence, and community connection among our young people.”

Amy Stevens, Sports Development Officer at Bedford Borough Council and event organiser, said, “The energy and commitment from all the young athletes this weekend was truly inspiring. Breaking the participation record shows just how valued this event is becoming. Our team, along with volunteers and families, made this possible, and we can’t wait to welcome even more participants when we return in March 2026.”

Every child who took part was awarded a medal, and trophies were presented to the top three finishers in each age group for both boys and girls, highlighting not just competition but also achievement and celebration.

One parent at the event said, “Sunday was absolutely superb. My daughter took part for the first time in March, and as soon as she finished, she wanted to do it again. So we were back again yesterday!! Made even better as she was fourth in March and came second this time, so all her training had paid off.

“It was an incredibly organised and smooth event, so friendly but with a competitive edge if needed. I’ve been looking for events for her around Bedford, especially since she watched the Olympics and watched the triathlons and is now hooked.”

Bedford Borough Council thanks all the children, parents, volunteers, and supporters whose involvement made the event a memorable success. Full results and event updates are available online at www.bedford.gov.uk/aquathlon

Looking ahead, the next Bedford Junior Aquathlon will take place in March 2026. Registrations will open early in the new year – keep an eye out and get ready to join the excitement!
