Bedford Borough Council is preparing to roll out expanded kerbside glass
recycling collections to all residential and commercial properties across the
Borough this autumn, following a successful trial in selected areas.
The trial, which tested the collection of glass in orange-lidded recycling bins,
has been well-received by both residents and collection crews. By making
glass recycling easier and more convenient, the Council aims to significantly
increase the amount of glass being recycled – contributing to higher overall
recycling rates across the Borough.
Preparations are now underway to extend the scheme later this year. The
recent fire at Elstow Waste Transfer Station has delayed the plan and means
the Council and its contractors are working closely to ensure the infrastructure
is in place to manage the anticipated increase in recycling tonnage.
Cllr Nicola Gribble, Portfolio Holder for Environment, said, “We’re excited to
be expanding kerbside glass collections across Bedford Borough. The
success of the pilot scheme shows there’s a real desire among residents to
recycle more, and more easily.
“By making glass recycling part of everyday collections, we’re offering a
simple, practical way for people to help reduce waste and protect our
environment.”
Residents will be notified when their area is due to join the scheme via leaflets
through their doors and updates through the Council’s social media and
website.
