A Letter to Local Businesses: Helping Care-Experienced Young People Feel at Home

The Engagement and Development Team within Children’s Services is calling on local businesses to help support an inspiring project led by care-experienced young people.

The project has been created by a group of young people with lived experience of care who want to make the transition into independent living a little easier for others following in their footsteps.

As young people leave care and move into their own homes, they often face an exciting but challenging new chapter. To help them settle in, the group is creating first-night boxes filled with practical essentials and thoughtful items to provide comfort, reassurance, and a warm welcome on their first night in their new home.

The project has been designed by young people, for young people, ensuring that every box reflects the real needs and experiences of those making this important transition.

To bring their vision to life, the young people have written an open letter inviting local businesses, organisations, and community groups to support the initiative through donations, sponsorship, or other forms of assistance. Every contribution, no matter the size, will help ensure that care-experienced young people have the essentials they need as they begin living independently.

By working together, the community can help ensure that every care-experienced young person moving into independent living receives not just practical support, but a reminder that they are valued and that people are rooting for their success.
