Bedford Borough Council is set to expand its kerbside glass recycling collections to include all residential and commercial properties across the Borough, starting from Monday 1st December 2025. This follows a successful trial in select areas where glass was collected in orange-lidded recycling bins, which was positively received by residents and collection crews alike.
The pilot scheme demonstrated strong community interest in recycling glass more conveniently, leading to increased recycling rates. With the expansion, the Council aims to build on this success, making it easier for everyone in Bedford Borough to contribute to waste reduction and environmental protection.
The rollout had been delayed due to the recent fire at Elstow Waste Transfer Station. However, the Council and its contractors are now working closely to ensure that the necessary infrastructure is fully in place to manage the expected increase in recycled glass tonnage effectively.
Councillor Nicola Gribble, Portfolio Holder for Environment, said, “We’re delighted to confirm that kerbside glass collections will start across Bedford Borough from Monday, 1 December. The strong response to our trial proves that residents want to recycle more glass, and making this part of regular collections is a straightforward way to help our environment and reduce waste.”
To help residents prepare for the changes, detailed leaflets will be delivered to all households, explaining the expanded glass collections and providing an update on plans for future household food waste collections. Additionally, stickers will be placed on all orange-lidded recycling bins to raise awareness that glass can now be placed in them.
