Four Free Hours of Parking Extended

Bedford Borough Council is extending its successful free parking initiative, to encourage more visitors to its shops, markets, events, and cultural attractions in Bedford town centre.

Four hours of free parking will now also be implemented at Lurke Street Multi-Storey Car Park just in time for half-term activities and Christmas events. It all starts from 1 October 2024 until 31 January 2025.

“The results of the initiative at Allhallows have been very encouraging and affirm our commitment to encouraging people to visit Bedford town centre,” said Councillor Andrea Spice, Portfolio Holder for Economic Growth, Planning and Prosperity at Bedford Borough Council. “The increased footfall and positive feedback from businesses and visitors show how important initiatives like this are for supporting our local economy and we hope to go even further by adding Lurke Street to the list.”

Councillor Jim Weir, Deputy Mayor and Portfolio Holder for Environment added, “By extending this initiative, we hope people will use it as an opportunity to visit Bedford. Whether it’s a walk down the Embankment, a visit to our great independent shops, heading to The Higgins Bedford to see the latest exhibition or a chance to catch up with friends and family over a meal, four hours should allow you time to explore.”

The Council will continue to monitor the impact of free parking on Bedford town centre travel patterns and air quality and ensure it remains sustainable in the long term.
