Celebrating 20 years of the Bedford Junior Aquathlon

Over 185 children took part in an exhilarating swimming and running event in Bedford at the weekend.

Now in its 20th year, the Bedford Junior Aquathlon returned on Sunday (11th October). The event combined swimming and running over varying distances, tailored to schoolchildren from Years 3 to 11.

Competitors started at poolside, demonstrating their swimming skills at Robinson Pools & Fitness, before changing their clothing for the running event in Bedford Park.

Children in each school year had their own distance to run and number of laps to swim, competing against the clock rather than each other.

Every child was awarded a medal to mark their achievements, and the winners in each age group were announced during a presentation at the end of the event.

This year’s Bedford Junior Aquathlon event was organised by Bedford Borough Council’s Sports Development team and sponsored by Gale Family Charity Trust and GLL.

One participant said; “It was wonderful to see the children participate, challenge themselves and enjoy the experience.

“A special mention to all the volunteers, who were absolutely brilliant. Their instructions were clear, their approach was encouraging, and they made every child feel comfortable, confident and included. What stood out most was how much thought and effort had gone into making the experience enjoyable and welcoming for the kids.

“Events like these make a real difference, giving children opportunities to build confidence, develop new skills and create wonderful memories. Thank you to the Council, the organisers and every single volunteer for making it such a positive experience.”

Councillor John Wheeler, Portfolio Holder for Customer Experience (inc. Leisure, Recreation and Culture) added; “It was superb to see children from across the Borough come together, be active and have fun. We are proud to provide inclusive sporting events like the Bedford Junior Aquathlon, where children get outdoors and enjoy being part of the community.

“The Council would like to thank all the children, parents, volunteers, supporters and sponsors for making the Aquathlon’s 20th anniversary a memorable success.”

The next Bedford Junior Aquathlon will take place in March 2027. Keep an eye out for registration early next year.
