Share Bedford at Bedford Central Library

Borrow tools, games, cake tins and more: Library of Things coming to Bedford

Bedford Borough Council is excited to announce a new partnership with Share Bedford to bring a Library of Things to Bedford Central Library. This innovative service will launch in January 2025, offering residents the opportunity to borrow a wide range of items, from tools and gadgets to party supplies and outdoor equipment.

Councillor Sarah Gallagher, Portfolio Holder for Customer Experience, Leisure and Culture at Bedford Borough Council, said; “We are thrilled to welcome the Library of Things to Bedford Central Library. This exciting new service aligns perfectly with our commitment to sustainability and community empowerment. By sharing resources, we can reduce waste and create a more sustainable future for our borough.”

Susan, from Share Bedford, went on to say, “A Library of Things is like a library, but instead of borrowing books, you borrow things. In other areas of the UK, Library of Things have lent items like waffle makers, binoculars, and sewing machines. The idea is that when you choose to borrow instead of buy, you’re not just lightening your load; you’re also reducing waste and making sustainable choices for our earth!”

Share Bedford will operate the Library of Things from the second floor of the library, offering a convenient and accessible location for residents. To prepare for the launch, the Share Bedford team will be at the library in December to answer questions from the public and discuss the project.

Share Bedford will be at Bedford Central Library on the following dates:

  • Wednesday 4 December, 12pm – 2pm
  • Saturday 7 December, 10am – 12pm
  • Wednesday 11 December, 12pm – 2pm
  • Saturday 14 December, 10am – 12pm
  • Wednesday 18 December, 12pm – 2pm
  • Saturday 21 December, 10am – 12pm

Donations will not be accepted unless Share Bedford have been notified in advance and a time has been agreed to drop the donation off. Anyone wishing to make a donation should email info@sharebedford.org

By borrowing items instead of buying them, residents can reduce their environmental impact and save money. The Library of Things also promotes community spirit and fosters a sense of shared responsibility.

There is a small charge to become a member of the Library of Things and to borrow each item. An annual membership will be £2.50 for those on a low income and £5 for others, with an option to donate an additional £5 if members wish. Each weekly loan will be £1.

Please note that Bedford Borough Libraries are supporting the Library of Things by providing a space, library staff cannot accept donations for the Library of Things.
