Library spotlight: Self-care

It’s Self-Care Day on 24th July and if you’re trying to read up on wellness or self-care but finding yourself doomscrolling for hours instead, maybe it’s time to put the smart phone down and pick up your library card instead.

There’s a wealth of information available to us online, from website to social media influencers, but sometimes that can become overwhelming. Why not try borrowing a book on the subject you’re exploring instead? No distractions, no notifications, just information at your own speed.

We have books on managing anxiety and other mental health conditions, wellbeing, mindfulness, and self-care, for all ages, in all our libraries. Ask staff to show you where to find them or request titles using the library app or online catalogue and pick them up at your local library.

You can become a library member in person or online, by speaking to staff at your local library or by heading to Online Registration – About Your Library – Virtual Library

We are promoting a wide range of stock types as part of Bedford Borough Council’s Year of Reading, which is taking place throughout 2025 with a wide range of events and initiatives including town centre performances, literary trails, and author readings.

There will also be a range of volunteering opportunities, such as the chance for adults to volunteer in local primary schools, helping to improve children’s reading skills and life chances.
